What Is Index Coverage?

Index Coverage is a report of how search engines process a website’s URLs for inclusion in their search index. The report separates indexed pages from pages excluded because of issues such as crawling barriers, duplicate signals, redirects or low-quality signals. It helps identify which important pages can appear in organic search results.

Key Takeaways About Index Coverage

  • Index status differs from crawl status.
  • Excluded URLs may be intentional or need correction.
  • Index Coverage is not a ranking report.

How Index Coverage Works

Index Coverage groups website URLs according to their current indexing status. Search engines may discover a URL, crawl its content, assess its signals, and then include it in the index. A URL can be crawlable without appearing in search results, so crawlability alone does not confirm indexing.

Reviewing the report involves checking indexed pages, excluded pages, warnings, and errors in Search Console. Exclusions may be deliberate, such as a duplicate URL controlled by a canonical URL, or they may point to a problem with access, redirects, content quality, or site signals. The practical task is to compare the reported status with the intended role of each URL.

Expert Note

When we review Index Coverage, we compare reported URL statuses with the site structure and the intended search role of each page. We check important landing pages, investigate unexpected exclusions, and confirm that technical signals support the preferred URL.

Index Coverage in Practice: A Real-World Example

A local trades business may find that its service pages are indexed, while several near-identical suburb pages are excluded as duplicates. We would check canonical signals, internal links, and page purpose before deciding whether any change is needed.
